System
Requirements
Want
to try OpenSkies for yourself? You don't need a high-powered, expensive
computer to run the Virtual Environment Training System. All you
need is the following components, which you could buy for under
$1000 retail:
A
PC running Windows:
- Windows
98 supports all features of OpenSkies.
- Windows
95 can run OpenSkies if you install the Win95 winsock patch.
- Windows
NT supports most (and all of the primary) features of OpenSkies.
-
Windows 2000 has not been tested at this time, but OpenSkies
should run on it at an equal level to NT.
- OpenSkies
will not run in DOS, OS2, or on any other computer
platform.
- Linux
support
may be added in the future.
A
Pentium 200 or great processor:
- Pentium
200 and greater processors can run OpenSkies. Better processors
offer a significant increase in performace.
- OpenSkies
will also run on comparable chips from other vendors.
64
Megs of RAM
A
graphics card with Open GL drivers:
- Diamond's
Fire GL 1000 Pro (8MB, PCI and AGP).
-
Diamond's
Viper 550 (16MB PCI and AGP).
- Diamond's
Viper 770 (32MB AGP).
- Diamond's
Viper II (32MB AGP).
-
ELSA's Erazor
series of video cards.
- The
Voodoo 3
family of video cards.
- The
Matrox Millenium
II (but only with the
SciTech GLDirect software).
- Other
cards
that have OpenGL drivers should function, but have not been tested
at this time. Cards that do not support OpenGL cannot run OpenSkies.
At
least 100 Megs of Hard Drive Space:
- More
space may be required as you add on terrain modules.
- OpenSkies
may require more space for the downloaded setup files if you are
not installing from CD.
And
optional items:
- A
sound card of some sort is required to hear any sound in
OpenSkies.
- A
joystick or gamepad is recommended, though you can
run OpenSkies without one. Force Feedback can be used on
controllers that have the option.
- You
could probably run OpenSkies without a keyboard, mouse
or monitor. But it probably wouldn't be very useful. The
monitor should be of at least Super VGA resolution (1024x768 at
15"+) if you want to enjoy the full benefits of the OpenSkies
graphics. OpenSkies can support monitor resolutions of up to 1600x1200
at 30Hz.
Specs
listed above are minimums. Better performance will be seen with
better hardware.
